This indicator shows the average annual age-adjusted hospitalization rate due to non-fatal, unintentional falls per 10,000 population aged 18 years and older. Cases where the first-listed cause of injury is injury due to fall are included.
Why is this important?
Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults. In addition, they are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. In the United States, more than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year. Twenty to thirty percent of older adults who fall suffer from moderate to severe injuries. Fall-related injuries include bruises, hip fractures, and head traumas. These types of injuries can increase the risk of early death and can make it difficult for older adults to live independently.
